Choosing the right backing for your patch

Choosing the right backing for your patch

Embroidered or woven patches have an undeniable charm. They're versatile, customizable, and add a touch of personality to just about anything they're affixed to. Whether you're looking to adorn your backpack, denim jacket, or even your favorite hat, patches offer a world of possibilities. But behind their intricate designs lies a crucial decision: the choice of backing.

Backings play a significant role in not just the aesthetics but also the durability and application of embroidered patches. From traditional sew-on options to modern marvels like iron-on and adhesive backings, the variety can be overwhelming. So, let's delve into the different backing options we offer to help you make an informed decision.

  1. Sew-On Backing:

A classic choice, sew-on backing involves stitching the patch onto the desired fabric using a needle and thread. While it may require a bit of patience and skill, sew-on patches offer unmatched durability. They can withstand numerous washes and are ideal for heavier fabrics like denim or canvas. Additionally, this backing option allows for easy removal and repositioning of the patch without leaving behind any residue.

  2. Iron-On Backing:

As the name suggests, iron-on patches come with a heat-activated adhesive backing that bonds to fabric when subjected to heat. This makes them incredibly convenient for those lacking sewing skills or time. With just a few simple steps involving an iron, you can attach the patch securely in a matter of minutes. However, it's essential to follow the instructions carefully to ensure proper adhesion and consider that iron-on application is not compatible with certain materials. Iron-on patches may not be as permanent or robust as sew-on ones, but they provide a quick and easy solution for temporary embellishments.

Do: Apply iron-on embroidered or woven patches to wool, denim, cotton, cotton blends, & velour.

Don't: Apply patches to nylon, leather, faux leather, vinyl, or waterproof rainwear.

The adhesive on the back of the patch will activate at 204°C or 400°F, so any heat-sensitive fabric will not be suitable for this patch type.

  3. Adhesive Backing:

Adhesive-backed patches are the epitome of convenience. They come pre-coated with a strong adhesive that allows for easy application by simply peeling off the protective backing and sticking the patch onto the desired surface. While they offer instant gratification and are perfect for non-fabric surfaces like laptops or phone cases, adhesive-backed patches may not withstand frequent washing or extreme conditions as successfully as sew-on or iron-on varieties.

  4. Velcro Backing:

Velcro-backed patches feature hook and loop fasteners, enabling easy attachment and removal. They're particularly popular among military and tactical gear enthusiasts who frequently swap out patches to match different missions or uniforms. Velcro backing offers versatility and reusability, allowing patches to be interchanged without damaging the fabric or the patch itself.
